Palestinian artwork highlights aftermath of Turkish and Syrian earthquake

Using art to raise awareness: Lubbad's response to the humanitarian crisis.

Editorial summary

The Medialatitudes feature highlights a collaborative art and photography project in solidarity with the victims of the devastating February 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye and Syria. At its core is an innovative visual statement combining the work of a young Palestinian artist, Mohammad Quraiqa, and Palestinian photographer and filmmaker Mohammed Lubbad, undertaken in the Molenbeek district of Brussels.

In response to the catastrophic earthquakes that struck southern Türkiye and northern Syria on 6 February 2023, resulting in extreme loss of life and widespread destruction, Quraiqa produced large-scale 3D ground drawings portraying children in distress, including two girls calling for help and a child trapped amid rubble. These powerful, symbolic compositions were created using charcoal and chalk and were meant to visually communicate collective grief and support for affected families.
